Dogs drool, shed, scratch, chew, pee, poo and they roll over anything and everything that would give them a horrible stench. If they stank outside the house, there wouldn’t be any problems. But if and when they gave off their odor indoors, it’s a pain. Worse, when your dogs leave the scent while they laid in their dog covers, guess what else would be smelling?

You probably would be thankful if you already bought your dog her own bed have prevented the mishap to happen in your bed. But then, how about her bed? Your dog definitely won’t clean her mess or deodorize her bed by herself. I guess no amount of training could teach your dog how to wash her bed covers. So it’s up to you to clean up after her.

Depending on the type of bed cover you are using, the ease of cleaning should vary. There are those that are machine washable and could easily lose the odor of the dog’s pee or poo. But there are those as well that are difficult and could keep the scent for a long time.

What is common to these dog bed cover though, at least to most of them, is that the material is machine washable. All you have to do is machine wash the covers, add some detergent, rinse then dry. What is important is that you do not use strong detergent. Strong detergent may destroy the fabric as well as give off a scent that your dog might not appreciate. Fabric softeners may be used as well, depending on the material of the cover but usually, you could use them

One dilemma you might encounter when washing your bed dog’s bed cover is the hair. There are cases when dog hairs clog the drain of the washing machine. When this happens, it could result to your laundry smelling funny after washing or the washing machine itself could give off that weird smell. There are numerous suggestions on how to avoid these. Some of the suggestions are:

  • shake the dog bed and hang it outdoors to have it aired every couple of days. This will help get rid of the hair deposits in the cover, as well as lessen the odor.
  • use wet rubber gloves to wipe over the covers before putting it in the washing machine. This helps in getting rid of the hair on the cover before washing.
  • hand wash the cover instead of machine wash – it takes time but it will definitely prevent dog hair from clogging the machine’s drain.
  • use lint roller to get hair off the covers before washing.

From, diet to bathing, to nail cutting to cleaning up after their mess, owning and caring for dogs as pets and as an added member of the family could be really tedious. Yes, it entails a lot of responsibility and effort to take care of a pet but it would be worth it since dogs are fun to have around.
